Air Asia Berhad is one of Malaysia’s latest and most promising companies which is primarily involved with the tourism industry. Air Asia is very much renowned for its low-fair, no frills airline and is considered to be the pioneers of budget air travelling in Asia. It currently operates domestic and international air routes spanning across more than 400 destinations into 25 countries. Air Asia’s fleet takes off and touches down mainly in Sepang’s LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) as well as in KLIA (KL International Airport). Its headquarters is in KLIA with affiliations with other countries through Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia. Its routes currently cover most states in Malaysia while also covering countries like Brunei, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Singapore, China, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, South Korea, with more in the plans.
The company is led by businessman Dato Seri Tony Fernandes and the company has won the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline Award by Skytrax for the year 2009 and 2010. Air Asia is very much popular for adopting its ticketless system. It began in 1993 when it was owned by DRB-Hicom operated the company which began operations in 1996. Fernandes then bought over the company in 2001 and took over its heavy debts under the Tune Air Sdn Bhd company name where he bought from DRB for RM1. In 1 year, he turned the company around and continue to grow until its current stature. A year after that (2003), it opened its second hub at Senai International Airport which would see it launch its first international flight to Bangkok.
Air Asia has since grown from strength to strength where it then established AirAsia X, its long haul airline with routes to Australia, India, China and England. AirAsia’s subsidiaries include AirAsia X, Thailand Air Asia, Indonesia Air Asia, VietJet AirAsia and Air Asia Philippines. Tune hotels and Tune Money are 2 closely associated companies to Air Asia as they are owned by Fernandes and funded by him.
