Not many people are actually aware that although there are several very popular fast food chains in Malaysia, the first fast food franchise in Malaysia and Asia is actually A&W which is very popular for its Root Beer beverage.
In fact, A&W has a long history in Malaysia since it was opened in 1963 by Mr and Mrs Lie Boff where the first outlet was actually located in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur. Meanwhile, the Drive-In outlet in Petaling Jaya which is very much a trademark of the this restaurant in the Klang Valley was opened in 1965, which would become the first-of-its-kind restaurant.
When KUB acquired the rights to A&W Malaysia, an aggressive expansion plan was launched and today, it is possible to operate your own A&W Restaurant through this franchise programme. You can choose between running a restaurant or a kiosk where the franchise fee is RM100,000.
A restaurant serves a full-menu outlet which includes food and drinks as well as snacks while kiosks are smaller outlets which are more focused in snacks and drinks. The initial investment for a restaurant is between RM600,000 and RM800,000 while you will need about half that amount to start a kiosk. Apart from that, a 5% promotion fee will be required from the gross sales on top of the 5% royalty fee that you will be required to pay. 0.5% from the gross sales meanwhile will be channeled for the training of staff and other related expenses.
